Head Baseball Coach Don Maines returns for his fourth
season as head coach at Long Island University. Maines
guided the Blackbirds to 16 wins last season, matching
the previous season’s total which was the most for the
program since 2003, when Long Island also won 16 games.
The last time the Blackbirds won more than 16 games was
during the 18-win campaign of 2001. Now in his fourth
year at the helm, Maines has his squad primed to improve
on its eighth-place finish in the Northeast Conference
last season.
Maines began his coaching career in 1987 as an assistant
at his alma mater, East Stroudsburg. He also served as an
assistant coach at Princeton for the 1989 season,
supervising its recruiting efforts.
Last season, Maines captured his 300th career win with an
11-7 victory at Temple on March 15. At season’s end, he
saw three of his players garner All-NEC First Team
honors: Frank DiMasi, Danny Etkin, and James Jones. It
was the first time three Blackbirds earned first team
honors since 1998.
MLB DRAFT UPDATE - Brooklyn, N.Y. - As it turned out, the
waiting was the hardest part for Long Island University
junior James Jones, who was taken by the Seattle Mariners
in the fourth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball
First-Year Player Draft. Anticipated to be an early-round
selection, the Brooklyn native had to wait an extra day
to become the second pick in the fourth round, as the
first three rounds took place on June 9. The Mariners
selected Jones with the 113th overall pick, making the
6-foot-3 lefthander the highest draft pick ever to come
out of Long Island.
